Custom-made orthotics should consist of:
- Patient history- Dr. Longo will ask questions concerning problems associated with your feet, legs, hips and low back. Any issues with walking or standing, prior injuries to lower extremities and previous orthotic use.
- Physical exam of your feet and lower extremity, consisting of non weight bearing (sitting) and weight bearing (standing) and gait analysis (assessing walking) to help determine if/what type of orthotic is necessary.
The next step is your feet being placed in a foam cast (some practitioners use plaster cast) in order to get the proper mold of your foot. This foam cast, along with instructions, will be sent to an orthotic company who will make the orthotic based on Dr. Longo's findings. When it is time to pick up your orthotics, Dr. Longo will provide an instructional session of how to wear your orthotics and the proper fitting of your orthotics into your shoes.
